Frustrated that I cannot watch the Tour de France Femmes on terrestrial TV (not even a highlights show as was provided for the men’s race), I am following it via The Guardian.

Yesterday was the time trial stage, won by world champion Marlen Reusser. (Incidentally, the article hyphenates “time-trial” in the first sentence, which is wrong.) The article in the print version has a photograph of Ruesser in full flow, with the picture caption saying: “Marlen Reusser’s third career Tour win gives her a commanding lead over Demi Vollering”.

This is incorrect. As the article explains, she leads Vollering (the pre-race favourite) by 14 seconds; the “commanding lead” is over defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.

The picture editor evidently confused the two riders, who were both referred to in the second paragraph. The picture editor may not have been a cycling fan, but it does highlight the importance of the final check: does the caption align with both the picture and the article?
