How I work

Approach

After you send me a message (using the form on this page) giving me some brief details of what you need proofreading and/or editing, and your timescales, I’ll be in touch to find out more.

I enjoy a mix of work, combining tasks that have a quick turnaround with longer-term projects. I can proofread and edit documents of all sizes, from leaflets to books, reports to web pages and funding applications.

Once we’ve made contact, I will obtain from you the document or materials to be proofread and/or edited along with a style guide to follow and any additional requirements. (Don’t worry if you don’t have a style guide, I can help with this.) We will then agree a contract to make clear what level of editing is required, based on either an hourly or a fixed rate.

My rates follow the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading‘s minimum rates. An indicative rate is up to 4000 words per hour for proofreading, and 1600 words per hour for editing, depending on the complexity of the text.

Software

My preference is to use track changes in Microsoft Word. There is a free web-version of Microsoft Office 365 which includes all the usual software plus OneDrive.

If your document cannot be converted to Word, I can work with Adobe Acrobat and add comments to a PDF.

Feedback

A first edit will usually include queries to answer. Once these are resolved, a second pass will complete the process.
